• Historic Shali Fortress

Explore the atmospheric ruins of Shali Fortress, the historic heart of Siwa Oasis.

The fortified settlement was constructed using kershef, a traditional material made from local salt, mud, rock, and plaster. This environmentally adapted architecture used materials from the oasis and helped protect residents from desert conditions and outside attacks.

Walk through winding passages, see the remains of houses and defensive walls, and admire views over the palm-filled oasis. Your guide will explain how the community developed around the fortress and how its distinctive architecture reflects Siwan life.

Temple of the Oracle of Amun

Visit the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, one of Siwa’s most historically significant archaeological sites.

Alexander the Great traveled to Siwa after entering Egypt and visited the oracle associated with Amun. The exact message he received remains uncertain, but the journey became one of the most famous episodes connecting the Macedonian ruler with Egyptian kingship and divine legitimacy.

From the elevated temple site, you can also appreciate how isolated Siwa would have appeared to ancient travelers crossing the Western Desert.

Mountain of the Dead

Explore the Mountain of the Dead, locally known as Gebel Al-Mawta.

This limestone hill contains ancient rock-cut tombs dating from the Late Period through the Greco-Roman eras. The tombs preserve evidence of the different cultural influences that shaped Siwa over many centuries.

Your guide will explain the site’s funerary role, point out notable decorative features where accessible, and help you appreciate the panoramic oasis views from the surrounding area.

Siwa Salt Lakes

Swim or float in the brilliant turquoise waters of the Siwa Salt Lakes.

The lakes are famous for their crystal-clear appearance, white salt formations, and high salinity. The salty water creates strong natural buoyancy, making floating feel almost effortless for many visitors.

Egypt’s official tourism portal highlights Siwa’s remarkably blue salt lakes as one of the oasis’s signature experiences.

Bring swimwear, a towel, sandals, and fresh water for rinsing after your swim. Avoid entering with fresh cuts, recently shaved skin, or irritated eyes because the concentrated salt can sting.

Cleopatra Spring

Relax beside Cleopatra Spring, one of the most famous natural springs in Siwa Oasis.

The circular stone pool is surrounded by palm trees, cafés, and local activity. Although its connection with Queen Cleopatra belongs to local legend rather than confirmed history, the spring remains one of Siwa’s most recognized gathering places. Egypt’s official tourism portal identifies Cleopatra’s Bath as one of the oasis’s most popular springs.

Depending on timing and local conditions, you may take a refreshing dip or simply relax with a drink nearby.

Great Sand Sea Desert Safari

Leave the cultivated oasis behind and enter the Great Sand Sea in a specially equipped 4x4 vehicle.

This immense dune region extends between western Egypt and eastern Libya. Egypt’s official tourism authority describes it as a roughly 600-kilometer expanse with some of the world’s largest dunes, stretching through the Western Desert toward Siwa.

Your local desert driver selects a route according to current sand, weather, access, and safety conditions. Desert excursions may be affected by regulations or permit requirements, so the final route is confirmed operationally. Egypt’s official tourism guidance recommends arranging desert travel through authorized guides or agencies and checking current regulations before departure.

Dune Bashing Adventure

Experience the thrill of climbing and descending the Great Sand Sea’s sweeping dunes in a capable 4x4 vehicle.

Dune bashing combines expert driving with the changing terrain of soft sand, steep ridges, and broad desert basins. The experience is exciting, but safety remains the priority. The intensity can be moderated when traveling with children, older guests, or visitors who prefer a gentler ride.

Travelers who are pregnant or have serious back, neck, heart, or mobility conditions should avoid dune bashing or request a scenic desert drive instead.

Detailed Itinerary

The itinerary is designed to cover Siwa’s essential attractions within one privately organized day from Marsa Matrouh. The exact sequence may change according to road conditions, daylight, desert access, weather, site opening times, and the pace of your party.

Early-Morning Pickup from Marsa Matrouh

Your private driver will meet you at your Marsa Matrouh hotel or confirmed pickup point before sunrise or in the early morning.

Settle into your comfortable air-conditioned vehicle for the journey southwest through the Western Desert. Rest stops can be arranged along the route when needed.

Because the drive normally takes approximately four hours each way, an early departure is essential for maximizing your time in Siwa.

Arrival in Siwa Oasis

Meet your local guide and begin exploring the oasis.

The contrast is immediate: date palms rise from the desert floor, natural springs appear among traditional settlements, and salt lakes reflect shades of turquoise against the surrounding earth.

Shali Fortress

Begin at the historic Shali Fortress in the center of the oasis.

Walk through the remnants of its narrow lanes and kershef buildings while learning how local residents used salt-rich mud, stone, and palm materials to create architecture adapted to Siwa’s climate. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities dates the settlement’s origins to the medieval period and notes its distinctive salt-and-mud construction.

Temple of the Oracle of Amun

Continue to the Temple of the Oracle, where ancient religious traditions, desert isolation, and the story of Alexander the Great come together.

Your guide will explain the importance of Amun, the role of oracles in the ancient world, and why Alexander’s journey to Siwa became politically and symbolically significant.

Mountain of the Dead

Visit the Mountain of the Dead and explore selected areas of the ancient necropolis.

The hillside’s rock-cut tombs represent multiple periods of Siwan history and reflect combinations of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artistic traditions. Access to individual tombs may depend on local opening arrangements.

Traditional Lunch

Pause for a traditional Egyptian or Siwan-style lunch at a local restaurant.

The menu varies according to seasonal ingredients and daily availability. Please inform the team before the tour about allergies, vegetarian preferences, or other dietary requirements.

Siwa Salt Lakes

Continue to the salt lakes for one of the day’s most photogenic experiences.

Change into swimwear and enter the clear, highly saline water when conditions allow. Your guide will help identify a suitable accessible pool and explain basic safety precautions.

After swimming, rinse your skin with fresh water and change into dry clothing before continuing.

Cleopatra Spring

Visit Cleopatra Spring and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere surrounding the historic pool.

Take a swim when appropriate or sit near the spring with a cold drink or tea. This is also a good opportunity to observe everyday life in the oasis.

Great Sand Sea 4x4 Safari

Transfer to a private 4x4 vehicle and enter the Great Sand Sea with an experienced local desert driver.

Ride across the dunes, stop at panoramic viewpoints, and experience the scale and silence of the Western Desert. The route is selected according to current access conditions and the time available before your return journey.

Dune Bashing

Enjoy an exciting dune-bashing session, with the intensity adjusted to your group.

Return to Marsa Matrouh

After the desert experience, rejoin your private road vehicle for the return journey to Marsa Matrouh.

Arrival is expected late in the evening, subject to traffic, road conditions, stops, and the final Siwa departure time.
