What You’ll See on the Giza Pyramids Tour

Great Pyramid of Khufu

The Great Pyramid (also known as the Pyramid of Cheops) is the largest of the three main pyramids and the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. Built around 2580–2560 BCE for the pharaoh Khufu, it originally stood about 146.5 meters high.

Pyramid of Khafre

Slightly smaller than Khufu’s pyramid but built on higher ground, the Pyramid of Khafre still retains some of its original outer casing stones near the top. It forms part of a larger complex that includes the Valley Temple.

Pyramid of Menkaure

The smallest of the three main pyramids, built for the pharaoh Menkaure. It is accompanied by three smaller queens’ pyramids.

Great Sphinx of Giza

Carved from the bedrock of the Giza Plateau, the Great Sphinx has the body of a lion and a human head traditionally associated with Khafre. It stands near the Valley Temple and remains one of the most recognizable monuments in Egypt.

Valley Temple

Located near the Sphinx, this temple formed part of Khafre’s funerary complex and was used in ancient rituals connected to the king’s burial.

Great Pyramid of Giza and Sphinx — What Makes Them Special?

History of the Great Pyramid

Constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, the Great Pyramid of Khufu required an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks. It remained the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years.

History of the Great Sphinx

Most Egyptologists associate the Sphinx with the reign of Khafre. The monument was carved directly from the limestone bedrock and has undergone several restorations over the centuries, including work ordered by later pharaohs.

Giza Plateau and the Old Kingdom

The Giza Plateau formed a major royal necropolis during the Old Kingdom. The three large pyramids, their associated temples, queens’ pyramids, and the Sphinx together represent one of the most important archaeological complexes in Egypt.

The complete tour lasts approximately 5 hours from hotel pickup to return. Time spent on the Giza Plateau itself is typically 2.5–3.5 hours, which is sufficient for the three main pyramids, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple area, and the panoramic viewpoint at a comfortable pace.
