Alexandria Day Tour from Marsa Matrouh Private Trip

Tour Highlights

This full-day itinerary introduces the ancient, medieval and modern identities of Alexandria. The route balances archaeological sites with waterfront views and time for a local lunch.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Visit the modern Library of Alexandria, a major cultural complex created to revive the original library’s spirit of scholarship, dialogue and openness. Depending on opening hours and ticket arrangements, your visit may include the main reading spaces, exhibitions or an exterior architectural stop.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

Descend into a Roman-era burial complex where Egyptian symbols and Greco-Roman artistic traditions appear together. Its underground chambers, funerary spaces and carved decoration make it one of Alexandria’s most distinctive archaeological experiences.

Pompey’s Pillar

See the monumental granite column traditionally called Pompey’s Pillar. Despite its popular name, the monument is associated with the Roman emperor Diocletian and stands near the remains of Alexandria’s ancient Serapeum.

Citadel of Qaitbay

Explore or photograph Alexandria’s celebrated waterfront fortress. Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay constructed the citadel between 1477 and 1479 on the site associated with the ruins of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Alexandria Corniche

Drive or walk along the city’s famous seafront promenade, where fishing boats, historic buildings, cafés and open views of the Mediterranean create a distinctly Alexandrian atmosphere.

Mediterranean Coast

Enjoy a different side of Egypt from the desert landscapes of Cairo and Upper Egypt. Alexandria’s sea air, harbour views and coastal architecture reveal the country’s long relationship with the wider Mediterranean world.

Historic City Centre

Pass through central Alexandria and observe the layered architecture of a living port city. The exact route may change with traffic, site access and the day’s available sightseeing time.

El Alamein Memorial

El Alamein is not included in the standard Alexandria itinerary. Travellers interested in its World War II museum, cemetery or memorials should Customize Your Itinerary before booking, as an additional stop would affect the time available in Alexandria.

Explore Alexandria’s Rich History

Alexandria offers one of Egypt’s clearest examples of cultural continuity. Its monuments reflect ancient Egyptian traditions, Greek urban planning, Ptolemaic scholarship, Roman rule, Christian communities, Islamic heritage and modern Mediterranean life.

Alexander the Great founded the city on Egypt’s northern coast in 331 BC. Under the Ptolemaic dynasty, Alexandria became Egypt’s capital and developed into an influential centre of commerce, philosophy, science and literature. The ancient Library and Lighthouse made the city famous throughout the Mediterranean world.

Roman rule added new civic buildings, burial sites and artistic traditions. Later Islamic and Mamluk rulers reshaped Alexandria’s defensive and religious landscape, most visibly through the Citadel of Qaitbay. The modern city continues to combine Egyptian identity with Greek, Roman, Arab and Mediterranean influences.

Top Attractions You’ll Visit

Alexandria’s leading attractions represent different eras rather than a single civilisation. Visiting them with an Egyptologist helps connect the individual monuments to the city’s broader historical development.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are among Alexandria’s most memorable ancient sites. Visitors descend below street level into a burial complex containing tombs, ceremonial spaces and decorative reliefs.

What makes the catacombs especially important is their blended visual language. Egyptian deities and funerary ideas appear beside Greek and Roman architectural elements, showing how communities in Roman Alexandria adapted multiple cultural traditions. Visitors should be comfortable using steps and entering enclosed underground spaces.

Pompey’s Pillar

Pompey’s Pillar rises above the archaeological remains of the ancient Serapeum district. The red-granite column is one of Alexandria’s most recognisable surviving Roman monuments.

Your guide will explain why the familiar name is historically misleading and how the monument relates to Emperor Diocletian. The surrounding site also provides useful context for understanding the temples, public buildings and intellectual life of ancient Alexandria.

Citadel of Qaitbay

The Citadel of Qaitbay stands prominently at the edge of the Eastern Harbour. Its defensive walls, stone towers and open Mediterranean setting make it both a historical monument and one of the city’s strongest viewpoints.

The fortress was built during the Mamluk period to defend Alexandria from naval attack. Its location is closely associated with the ancient Pharos, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, whose ruins were reused or remained in the surrounding area.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a modern institution rather than a reconstruction of the ancient library. Its purpose is to carry forward Alexandria’s legacy as a centre for research, education, cultural exchange and public learning.

The complex includes the main library and several museums, specialist libraries, exhibition areas and science-related facilities. Access to individual areas can vary, so the exact visit should follow the confirmed itinerary and opening schedule.

Alexandria Corniche and Eastern Harbour

The Corniche connects many of Alexandria’s coastal districts and provides continuous views across the Mediterranean. It is the place where the historic port city feels most alive, with fishing boats, waterfront cafés, urban traffic and sea-facing architecture.

A guided drive along the Corniche also links the day’s major landmarks geographically, from the library area towards the historic Eastern Harbour and Qaitbay Citadel.

Who Is This Tour Perfect For?

This tour is best suited to travellers who are comfortable with an early start, a long road journey and a full day of historical sightseeing. Because the experience is private, the pace can be adapted within the practical limits of opening hours and return travel time.

• Families: Private transportation makes the long journey easier to manage with children.
• Couples: Enjoy a more personal experience without travelling in a shared tour group.
• Solo travellers: Gain the convenience and historical context of a private guide.
• History lovers: Explore Greco-Roman, Ptolemaic, Roman and Mamluk heritage.
• Photographers: Capture archaeological details, harbour scenery and coastal architecture.
• Luxury-minded travellers: Choose private, comfort-focused transport and personalised service.
• Small groups: Share the experience with friends or relatives while keeping the tour private.
• Extended-stay cruise travellers: Suitable for guests spending additional time in Marsa Matrouh or the North Coast, rather than those facing a short same-day port schedule.

Best Time to Visit Alexandria

Alexandria can be visited throughout the year, but spring and autumn usually offer the most comfortable balance for outdoor sightseeing. Summer is popular with North Coast visitors, while winter brings cooler temperatures, stronger coastal winds and a greater chance of rain.

Spring: March to May

Spring is well suited to walking around archaeological sites and spending time beside the harbour. Temperatures are generally more comfortable than during the height of summer.

Summer: June to August

Summer is the busiest period along Egypt’s North Coast. Expect brighter sun, warmer conditions, higher humidity and more local traffic, especially around weekends and holidays.

Autumn: September to November

Early autumn often combines warm Mediterranean conditions with fewer peak-season crowds. It is a strong period for travellers interested in both sightseeing and coastal atmosphere.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cooler and can be breezy or wet by Egyptian standards. Bring a light waterproof layer and confirm attraction schedules, particularly around public holidays.
