Settle into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the scenic drive northwest toward the Mediterranean coast. En route, your guide will provide an overview of Egyptian history and what awaits in Alexandria, setting the stage for an enlightening day.

Visit the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

One of Alexandria’s premier archaeological treasures, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa represent the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt. Dating primarily to the 2nd century AD, these multi-level underground tombs blend Roman, Greek, and Egyptian artistic traditions in a unique syncretic style.

Descend into the subterranean complex to explore elaborately carved chambers, family tombs, and a central funerary hall. The intricate reliefs depict Egyptian deities alongside Greco-Roman motifs, illustrating the cultural fusion characteristic of ancient Alexandria. This site offers profound insights into burial practices and the daily life of the city’s diverse inhabitants during the Roman period.

Explore Pompey’s Pillar

Rising approximately 25 meters, Pompey’s Pillar is a striking granite monolith and one of the few remaining ancient monuments visible above ground in central Alexandria. Erected in the 4th century AD, it likely commemorates Emperor Diocletian rather than Pompey the Great, despite the popular name.

Surrounded by the remnants of the ancient Serapeum temple complex, the pillar provides excellent photographic opportunities and a tangible connection to Alexandria’s Roman era. Your guide will elaborate on its architectural significance and historical context within the broader Greco-Roman landscape.

Visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

A contemporary architectural triumph, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina stands as a cultural beacon on the Mediterranean shore. Inaugurated in 2002, its design evokes the sun rising over the sea and symbolizes the revival of the legendary ancient Library of Alexandria—one of the greatest centers of learning in antiquity.

Tour the expansive complex, which houses millions of books, specialized museums, a planetarium, and various exhibition spaces. The site offers a compelling educational experience, highlighting Alexandria’s enduring role as a hub of knowledge, scholarship, and cultural exchange.

Explore the Citadel of Qaitbay

Perched dramatically on the Mediterranean coastline, the Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th-century Mamluk fortress constructed on the ruins of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Wander through its robust stone walls, towers, and courtyards while enjoying sweeping panoramic views of the sea. The citadel exemplifies military architecture of the period and served as a vital defensive stronghold protecting Alexandria’s harbor.

Lunch at a Local Restaurant

Rejuvenate with a delicious lunch at a reputable local restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean. Savor authentic Egyptian and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, including fresh seafood, grilled meats, mezze, and traditional Egyptian specialties. The relaxed seaside ambiance provides a perfect interlude amid your explorations.

After a fulfilling day, relax during the comfortable return transfer to your hotel in Cairo. Your driver will ensure a smooth journey, allowing time to reflect on the day’s discoveries. Services conclude upon arrival.

Alexandria – Egypt’s Mediterranean Jewel

Alexandria occupies a distinguished position in world history as a city founded by Alexander the Great to serve as the capital of his empire. Established in 331 BC on the site of a modest fishing village, it rapidly evolved into a cosmopolitan metropolis renowned for its library, lighthouse, and role as a melting pot of cultures.

Throughout the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, Alexandria thrived as a center of science, philosophy, and commerce. Its strategic location on the Mediterranean facilitated trade and intellectual exchange across the ancient world. Today, the city retains its distinctive charm, characterized by elegant Corniche promenades, historic neighborhoods, and a palpable blend of influences from Greek, Roman, Islamic, and modern Egyptian eras.

A Cairo to Alexandria day tour introduces travelers to this layered heritage, revealing why Alexandria continues to captivate visitors with its intellectual legacy and coastal allure.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa constitute an extraordinary subterranean necropolis discovered accidentally in 1900. Representing a remarkable synthesis of Roman and Egyptian funerary traditions, the site features three levels of tombs (though the lowest is currently flooded).

Visitors descend a spiral staircase into a cool, atmospheric environment adorned with carvings of Anubis in Roman military attire, serpents, and other hybrid iconography. The main chamber and surrounding tombs highlight the cultural and religious syncretism prevalent in Roman Egypt. This visit offers one of the most intimate encounters with ancient Alexandrian burial customs.

Pompey’s Pillar

Pompey’s Pillar stands as a monumental testament to Roman engineering and imperial commemoration. Carved from a single piece of Aswan granite, it originally formed part of a larger temple complex dedicated to Serapis.

Its imposing presence amid the archaeological ruins provides a focal point for understanding Alexandria’s transition under Roman rule. The surrounding area yields additional insights into the scale and sophistication of ancient urban planning.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina honors the intellectual glory of its ancient predecessor, which attracted scholars like Euclid and Archimedes. Its striking circular design and expansive cultural facilities underscore Alexandria’s renewed commitment to knowledge and global dialogue.

Exhibitions, manuscripts, and interactive spaces within the library complex enrich the visitor experience, connecting past achievements with contemporary cultural endeavors.

Citadel of Qaitbay

The Citadel of Qaitbay exemplifies Mamluk defensive architecture while linking directly to one of antiquity’s greatest wonders—the Pharos Lighthouse. Constructed in the 1470s by Sultan Qaitbay, it repurposed stones from the ruined lighthouse.

Its strategic position offers commanding views of the harbor and serves as a reminder of Alexandria’s enduring maritime importance. Exploring its ramparts and interiors reveals layers of military history spanning centuries.
